Why print spiral bound books?
Customers print spiral bound books for several key reasons:
- Spiral bound printing is the most durable and inexpensive binding option.
- Pages flip around 360° and lay flat — convenient and user-friendly for professional and educational uses.
- Coil binding offers the most customization options, including plastic covers, tab dividers, lamination, and waterproof paper options.
Spiral binding provides versatile, on-the-job flexibility.
Spiral binding uses a strong, flexible plastic coil, making spiral bound books ideal for materials that need to withstand rough handling and frequent use. If your printed materials will be used for months or years at a time, order coil bound books for the longest shelf life.
All these factors make spiral bound book printing the go-to option for the best overall user experience and product value. When you need high-quality books that look great and withstand years of heavy use, spiral binding is the clear choice.

"I was pleased that the spiral-bound booklets came out perfectly. I was nervous about ordering bound books when I have always done the binding myself. But I'll have Docucopies do the entire job from now on. Nice work."JD S. - IL
"I wrote a 282 pg book and had no idea of how I was going to afford getting it printed up in some nice presentable form. Office Depot and all of the local printing shops wanted way too much money to accommodate my needs. Then as I was pretty much frustrated and ready just to give up, your website popped up on my phone internet screen. I thought that this was going to be " to good to be true", but then I sent an email of what I was hoping to get done and I got a quick response back. I even had this book scattered out in 9 different Word file document files, and your design department put it all together just as my instructions were given. You made everything work together perfect, and for a very affordable price. Then when I received my first shipment of spiral bound books, I was astonished at the finished project. I just couldn't believe how the whole process turned out so perfect! I have since then placed two more orders and have been able to get this Christian book distributed out in a way that I never dreamed it possible! Thank you so much in being the perfect resource in helping my ministry get the message of the Gospel out to many people all over the country! You guys are the BEST!!!"Kevin A. - LA

Designing Your Spiral Bound Book
Spiral Book Binding Margin
For spiral bound booklets, the binding will go into the page approximately 0.28". We recommend at least a 0.5" binding margin. This will ensure you don't have any content that goes into or is too close to the binding. If you are worried how the margins on your book will look, we recommend requesting a digital proof.
Page Numbers
If your page numbers are all on the left or right side of the sheet, half of the pages will have the number on the binding edge. This makes navigating the content more difficult. We recommend you alternate your page numbers from left to right to keep them on the opposite side of the binding. Keeping them centered at the bottom of the page is also a good option.

Spiral Bound Book Printing FAQ
What is spiral binding?
Spiral binding, also called coil binding, is a book binding method that uses a durable plastic coil threaded through holes along the edge of the pages. This allows pages to turn 360 degrees and lay completely flat, making it ideal for workbooks, manuals, planners, and other frequently used documents.
How many pages can a spiral bound book accommodate?
Spiral bound books can accommodate up to 916 pages, depending on the paper type and thickness. This maximum is based on lightweight 20/50# bond paper with heavy 80# cover stock. Thicker paper stocks will reduce the total page count. Our automated price calculator will alert you if your page count exceeds the maximum for your selected options.
Most spiral bound books for typical projects fall between 50 and 400 pages.
Is spiral binding better than wire-o binding?
Spiral binding is more durable and flexible than wire-o binding, making it better for long-term use and heavy handling. Spiral coils can bend without damage and allow pages to turn 360 degrees. Wire-o binding offers a more rigid, professional appearance but is more prone to bending or crushing. The best choice depends on whether durability or presentation is more important for your project.
What are spiral bound books best used for?

Will I receive a digital proof before you print my books?
In most cases, we do not automatically send a digital proof, so please request this in the notes if desired. We will send a link to your proof on our website, which displays it like a book — with the pages on the left and right and binding in the middle — so you can make sure everything looks correct with the sequencing and left-to-right orientation.
But there are some cases in which we must send a proof and receive approval before we can print:
- Files which are not JPG, PNG or PDF
- Any time you request file edits
- If we happen to notice something that doesn't look right
Can you mail spiral bound books?
Yes! Simply click Bulk Mailing on the order form and choose Mail in Padded Envelopes. Upload your mailing list with your print files at checkout.
